Top 100 / How we rank
How we rank
The short version: we measure attention, not opinion, and nobody can pay to move up the list.
What "popular" means here
Casinos and game makers do not publish play counts for individual slots. What is public is how much people watch and talk about each game. That is what the buzz score measures. A slot ranks high when a lot of people choose to watch it being played.
The pool
Each update starts with a pool of 163 well-known slots: the most played online games from the major studios, and the machines that dominate US casino floors. The pool is built from maker catalogues, industry performance reports and our own research. The 100 with the highest buzz score make the list. Right now that is 48 online slots and 52 casino floor machines.
The buzz score
For every slot in the pool we search YouTube for videos uploaded in the past 12 months that have the slot's name in the title, and take the 20 with the most views. Each video adds points based on its view count, on a logarithmic scale, so a slot needs many well-watched videos to score high and one viral clip cannot carry it. The slot with the most points scores 100 and everything else is scaled against it.
| Signal | Status | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Live | Views on the 20 most-watched videos naming the slot, past 12 months |
| Planned | Posts, upvotes and comments naming the slot, past 12 months | |
| X | Planned | Posts naming the slot, past 12 months |
Today the score is built from YouTube alone. Reddit and X are part of the model and will be blended in as that data becomes available to us. When they are, this page will say so and show the weights.
Rules we apply
- A video only counts if the slot's name is in its title.
- Sequels and spin-offs are scored separately. A Gates of Olympus 1000 video does not count toward Gates of Olympus.
- Where one name covers many themes or versions, such as Dragon Link, Wheel of Fortune, Quick Hit or Monopoly, videos of any version count toward that name unless the version is ranked separately.
- Slots with everyday names, such as Buffalo, Zeus or Cleopatra, only count videos whose titles also contain a slot or casino term.
- Games that have been withdrawn from US casino floors are left out.
Known limits
- YouTube favours games that film well. Big jackpots and high-limit play draw views, so casino floor machines popular with US slot channels score strongly.
- Online slots that are huge outside the English-speaking world can be under-counted.
- A title search is imperfect. We filter out unrelated videos, but a few slip through and a few real ones get missed.
- Popular does not mean good value. A slot can be widely watched and still have a low payback.
The videos
Every slot links to real play sessions: up to three of its most-watched videos from the search above, each from a different creator. The picture beside the slot is the thumbnail of the first one. Press a thumbnail or a creator's name and the video plays here in the standard YouTube player, and each one also links out to YouTube.
We only link videos that are at least two minutes long and that the creator allows to be embedded, and we skip casino operator and promotional channels. The videos belong to the creators who made them, and we are not affiliated with any of the channels.
Cruise ship category
For casino floor machines we run a second search for videos that name the machine and a cruise term in the title. At least 3 separate videos are needed for the At sea badge. See the cruise ship ranking.
Volatility, RTP and max win
For online slots these come from the game maker's own published figures, cross-checked against independent slot databases. Many online slots ship in several RTP versions and the casino picks one, so the figure we show is the maker's default. For casino floor machines, payback is set by each casino within the limits its regulator allows, so we do not show a single RTP, and volatility is our estimate. See the volatility guide.
Independence
Top5Slots.net does not accept payment for rankings and does not link to casinos. The site is funded by display advertising, which has no input into the list.
