Slot volatility explained: how to pick your level

Volatility decides whether a slot drips out small wins or saves everything for one big hit. Here is what the five levels mean and how to choose.

Put the same $100 into two slots with the same payback percentage and you can have two completely different nights. On one, the balance bobs up and down for an hour. On the other, it is gone in fifteen minutes, or it is $900. The difference is volatility.

What volatility is

Volatility, sometimes called variance, describes how a slot distributes its payouts. Every slot is designed to return a certain share of the money wagered over the long run. Volatility is about the shape of that return: many small wins, or a few large ones.

It is set by the game's math. A designer who puts most of the payback into frequent line wins builds a low volatility game. A designer who moves that money into a rare bonus round with a huge top prize builds a high volatility one.

The five levels we use

LevelWhat a session feels likeTypical top prize
LowFrequent small wins, slow balance changesHundreds of times your bet
MediumRegular wins with an occasional bigger hitA few thousand times your bet
Medium-HighQuiet stretches, then the bonus does the workSeveral thousand times, or a linked jackpot
HighLong dry spells, large bonus swings5,000 times your bet and up
ExtremeMost sessions lose, a few are enormousTens of thousands of times your bet

Volatility is not payback

This is the part people mix up. A high volatility slot does not pay back less than a low volatility one, and it does not pay back more. Payback is measured by RTP. Volatility only tells you how rough the road is. A slot can be low volatility with a poor RTP, or extreme volatility with a good one.

RTP tells you where the ride ends up over millions of spins. Volatility tells you how bumpy it is on the way.

How to choose

Start with your budget, not your mood

High and extreme games need room to breathe. If your session budget only covers 50 to 100 spins at your bet size, a high volatility slot will often finish it before the bonus ever lands. On a small budget, either drop the bet size or drop the volatility.

Decide what you want from the session

If the goal is an evening of play, low and medium games stretch a budget further. If the goal is a shot at a large win and you are comfortable with the likely outcome being a loss, high volatility is built for exactly that trade.

Check the rating before you play

Online slots usually show a volatility rating in the game's info or paytable screen. Casino floor machines do not, which is why our floor ratings are estimates and are marked that way.

What volatility cannot do

No volatility level improves your odds. Every slot has a house edge and nothing about bet timing, stop buttons or "due" machines changes it. Picking a volatility level is about choosing the kind of experience you want, within a budget you have already decided you can afford to lose.
